Governance and regulation in the crocodile industry

Crocodile farming, particularly in Australia is subject to intense scrutiny from multiple governing bodies ensuring best practice across the industry. 'from pond to product' every step is highly regulated meaning the Arley Rae team put significant (paper) work into navigating permits and regulations. This is certainly worthwhile to bring you unique, beautiful products whilst ensuring our Saltwater Crocodile is safe for generations to come. 

CITES

CITES or the Convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora came into being to stop illegal international trade and exploitation of animal and plant products that may result in extinction or endangerment of the species. there are different levels of regulation and saltwater crocodiles are listed as an appendix II species meaning international trade in crocodile products is possible, if a strict set of conservation conditions are adhered to. 

Local government

Farming, keeping and the collection and harvesting of crocodile eggs are all permitted activities subject to inspection, assessment and verification by government parks and wildlife officials and the adherence to state and country code of practice. 

Regulation of the industry by the NT government contributes $4.6 million dollars to local economy on an annual basis. They directly employ 13 full time employees responsible for the regulation of crocodile farming. 

ICFA

ICFA or the International crocodile farmers association is a not for profit association created to unite farmers in developing and improving crocodile farming practices focusing on animal welfare, the environment, people and local communities.  Certified ICFA members undertake annual audits by a specially trained, independent and impartial assessors and ICFA provide its members with operational guidelines and standards that demonstrate their operations are legal, sustainable and achieve appropriate animal welfare outcomes.
